My vine is growing great. We got a couple of days of hot (102)weather about a week ago and I saw some scorching on the new baby leaves. I set up a shade tent to cover just the growing end of the vine, seems to be helping but the leaves are still looking stressed, shiny w/some sunken splotches is the mites or what? I installed my soaker hoses and a spray head to cool things down. The plant was transplanted April 15th, and is now about twelve feet long with lots 4 or five secondary vines. In general everying looks great except I am concerned about the new groth on the main vine. Any ideas? I would like to hear any suggestions. I started out with a general broadcasting of 15-15-15 fert., Ironite, kelp, now using side shots of fish emulsion once a week. Wind breaks are up on two sides with sunflowers growing to the south side. Temps are supposed to be in the high 90's for the weekend. The patch faces south on a very sheltered slope and gets full sun from 9am to 3 pm then filtered sun/shade. Any suggestions about what is going on with the new growth would be greatly appreciated. Stay cool and keep growing!

Judi...shiney growth on the tips with some sunken areas as well as some raised or bubbled-looking areas could be a serious or potential problem or it could be nothing. It really would help if you had a picture you could post here...if you don't have a digital do you have a friend who could snap a shot to send? There are some serious maladies that involve the growing tips or new growth...I would hate to say the "M" word w/o a picture.........Glenn

Its probably just the heat damaged leaves that were in the tip's (bunched up leaves at tip)when those hot days hit you....now those heat damaged leaves are opening up and your seeing the damage. Sometimes the tender young tips and leaves get damaged by insecticides and look the same way you describe them when they open up....but you do not mention any applications of sevin etc....is it just the main tips or side vine tips too?...................G

Glenn...The problem seems to be resolving itself...my only concern was the main vine tips, the side vines new growth seems normal, since the weather has cooled off quite a bit ( back to the 70's) all the tips seem to be fine, whew...quite a scare, especially since this is my only plant, I think this has taught me to always have a back up plant. Definitely will be scouting for patch #2 fy 2002!!! Thanks for your help. I will be trying to send an email of the symptoms later today.
