If given the choice between the two, which would growers prefer to use if only given the opportuniy to treat a plant one time?

Ideally, I would most like to hear from folks who have used at least one of these but preferably both.

Please don't allow the mystique of Furadan's restricted use pesticide status lead you to draw the conclusion that it must work better. Rather it is simply more toxic to mammals. I can obtain any chemical made, so if I'm overlooking a longer residual option, I'd like to know that too.

I have been granted tentative approval to install a patch at my sons elementary school. While I will have regular access & water. I am NOT going to be sparying these plants once a week like I will be here at the homestead.

I appreciate any serious comments or thoughts that will help these kids raise a nice one without regular spraying.

Thanks,
Steve Jepsen

I would be afraid to have or use Furadan with a son in elementary school.

I should clarify something. The only reason I am considering Furadan at all is because it is soil applied (like the Merit) at planting time. The I will cover the plants crown & the treated soil with straight bagged cow manure. In this way, the children won't be exposed. The install will take place when the kids aren't there. The kid's also don't have access to this courtyard, but it is visible from windowed halls on all 4 sides. My issue is with the legal definition of "spraying". According to new federal laws, if I (or anyone else) "sprays" a registered pesticide on school property, then all parents must be notofied in writing.

So I'm formulating a liquid concoction of calcium, seakelp extract, & a surfactant for use as a weekly "non pesticide tonic" that I have evidence will keep down the powdery mildew.

Sad if you think about it for a minute. While baking soda (armicarb) & M-Pede (soap) are both practically non-toxic, they have EPA registration numbers. That means that they meet the legal definition of a pesticicde. So their use requires a mailer sent to all parents. My "foliar nutrient cocktail" could be even MORE toxic, but since I'm not marketing it as a fungicide it doesn't need a registration number & therefore it is exempt. AAAAGGGGHHHH!!!!

Science & Liberal Politics never meet!

Rick, Yes, as far as I know you can. The Bravo surfactant is probably the same on in Weatherstick right? The actives are OK. To check the surfactants, I'd still do a quick jar test. If they don't react by gelling or falling out in the first hour or two, then your probably OK.
