Calling all pumpkin masters. My little giant tipped over while I was on call yesterday. It sort of kinked and slightly main stem that was going to be my primary. I paniced and stood the plant back up with stakes and rope etc. Was that the right thing to do? Should I lay it back down? Is that normal to have it fall over? Some of the leaves now that it is standing up again are oriented face down. Thanks

I'm no pumpkin master, but if the plant is a month old or so it may fall over and start to vine. They can't grow UP forever. A kink is not good though, it should be a nice easy bend. Probably is better that you straightened it out. I would build up dirt around the kink and let it (hopefully) bend slowly next time. --Bruiser

Mound up your soil, up to the first leaves. When the leaves get bigger, the wind will wreak havoc with your vines. Protect the plant from winds, and keep your vines covered. You don't have to stake the plant "up". When the main vine is ready to take off, it will lay itself down.Remember, everywhere the vine produces a leaf, it will also send roots into the ground. By covering the vine with soil, water and fertilizer absorption is maximized!
