I have roots all over the place, down deep, at the surface. I'm afraid that pulling the weeds will cause more damage to the plants than letting the weeds grow. What should I do?

weed,,,,,,, In my opinion,,, a few roots to be sacrificed is nothing compared to an out of control patch,,, although next year try to stay on top of weeds, get em when their small,,, so you dont pull soil up when weeding,,,

I've heard a sharp fillet knife at the base of the weeds would work if pulling them or hoeing isn't an option. I've never tried it though.

I enjoy being out in my pumpkin patch so much I don't mind a little weeding. If you ask me you have to keep up on it, if you don't its kind of a lost cause.

I MUST weed, its not that I want to or enjoy it, its like an itch that MUST be scratched LOL

Also I worry that weeds/grass will hold in moisture and increase the chance of powdery mildew. That may not be true though its just my thoughts.

Mice can go into the weeds and live and have a nice pumpkin to eat. LOL happened to me once.

Kurty,

My first 2 years growing I followed the hippy-dippy method of growing pumpkins and (SURPRISE!!!) didn't do so good.

This year, weeds must die!!!

Plants growing like horror-movie monsters, no competition from weeds for nutrients or sunshine.

I use a variety of fancy hoes, fingers, and a sharp knife.

Weed and rest assured: your pumpkins will thank you.

Never ever let a single morning glory go to bloom in your patch...they are the most beautiful yet sinister weeds you will ever encounter.

Weeds take water and nutrients that you have tried so hard to make available for your Pumpkin. The also are homes for bugs. Pull them when they are really small. If you wait till they get established they are a LOT harder to control.
