What pathogen causes the dreaded foaming stump ??

Ron... I've had a lot of foaming stump this year but it isn't caused by a bug. It is mainly due to excess water/humidity best I can tell. Clean out around your stump- cut off the leaves in the area and pull any weeds- let the sun in and the wind blow to encourage drying. Here is some more info on it from pap... http://www.bigpumpkins.com/msgboard/ViewThread.asp?b=14&p=352831

I'm no expert on it but I noticed no one responded on your question... hope it helps.

I'm in agreement with weatherman. When I've found this condition, the stumps were FULL of water. Drilling a drain hole, cutting out the rotted tissue, and applying Captan has helped so far. I took things a bit further in "airing out the plant" by cutting all the leaves attached to the main vine right down to the pumpkin. In one day of 90 degree heat, the ground had dried out and all leaking had stopped.

I experienced this with some JOLs last year. With my giant this summer, I added a little sand and have the main stump a foot up higher creating a mild grade down for the main vine to run. This gives constant drainage, and stay clean like mentioned above.

To answer Ron's question, I don't think anyone knows for sure yet. I've had oozing and rotting stumps, but not foaming per se, and it has always looked bacterial to me but I've never had one tested to be sure. It seems to be one of those things that I always intend to do but the sample never actually gets sent.

I don't know if the same fungus causes all them or not but the pathology report I got back was Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and pythium. All these were in the roots and fusarium and rhizoctonia were present in the the vines.

Wow, quite the pathology report. I hope you can get it under control.

Tim, I was reading about PGA plus. Don't know if this might help. (it's talking about basil, but I've heard of people using it on pumpkins too.

from http://www.arborgrow.com/basilresearch.htm

"Plants were monitored weekly for symptoms of Fusarium wilt and symptomatic plants were assayed for Fusarium (predominantly Fusarium oxysporum) and other fungal species using a fusarium - selective medium (Komada's medium). Data was analyzed using Fisher's Protected LSD.

Basil treated with Organica's Plant Growth Activator Plus showed a drastic decrease in the incidence of Fusarium wilt (93 % in Genovese) and a significant increase in yield (29.4 % in Genovese)."
