I picked up some Sevin today, the store had different kinds. I bought the liquid kind that you attach to the hose and spray on. I was just wondering what kinds everyone has had good/bad experiences with...liquid or dust/powder? Maybe they both work just as well? They had a 4 kinds:
- liquid in spray bottle, for spot treating
- liquid in a hose-attachment bottle
- dust in a little can
- dust in a bigger container

I have sold pesticides to commercial applicators for 15 years now (somebody has to do it! LOL)

The liquid forms are generally most effectice & much safer as long as you keep them off your skin. Dust forms have a tendancy to become airborne & could be breathed in. Not cool. Bugs won't know the difference. But you might.

Read & follow the directions 100%. Too little may not work & you'll have to reapply. Too much may cause damage to the plants. Stick to the label!!!

Use only in the early evening whenever possible. Sevin is toxic to bees. So apllying when they're not active is the best bet. It's cooler then too.

High temperatures set the plants up for trouble. Only spray when the temps aren't expected to go much over 80 dgerees F.

Contact an experienced local grower or agriculture copperative extension agent for spray dates for the pests you are targetting.

Compressed air sprayers are pretty good for liquid Sevin. A two gallon pump sprayer is about $34.00 around here. SprayDoc is good value for the money. Craftsman (from Sears) is OK too.
Hose end sprayers work fine if they're clean. But these should only be connected to a hose bib that has a backflow preventer on it. This prevents the Sevin from backing up into the house drinking water in the rare event of a strong water demand situation.

Always clean equipment with clear water after spraying to prevent clogging the next time you use your sprayer. The dried residue will eventually clog pump parts & spray nozzles.

Make sure to wash yourself thoroughly with soap & water when finished.

Protect liquid Sevin from temperatures below 40*F. It settles & clumps when it's gotten too cold.

Brigitte,

All forms work well, but more than anything else, coverage is important. (Sometimes all those little bugs are hiding on the underside of the leaves.) They make a "duster" that blows the powder under the leaves also.

I use Rotenone. It is non toxic and I use it for everything. I like using things that are not so potent as Sevin.
