This year and every other year my leaf stalks turn brown near the base and then turn mushy causing the leaf to collapse and die. I finally got fed up enough to send a sample to a lab. The diagnosis is Rhizoctonia Solani. Anyone ever dealt with it? Is there anyway to get rid of it in my soil?

Thiophanate methyl is a winner as a drench but its a lot of work. Like G says, the causal pathogen is with us for good.

Thanks for the replies, it doesn't sound good. Been doing some research on controlling it and here's a good link on the most effective fungicides.

having same problem this year spent close to 500 bucks on fungicides last week and drenched on sunday and monday lot of other folks having same problem.was also told better to put products on by hand rather than through drip to get better coverage will have to see if it stops it already seems better.Jerry

I believe it to be directly responsible for the loss of stumps this year(someone chime in if I'm wrong). Water accumulates inside the base of the leaves and they rot at that point and topple over.

Methyl-bromide worked great bit is banned now due to holes in the ozone. Strawberry exports to Japan are our largest cash export crop and the final legal use in this country.

Basamid is the best alternative but it's not foolproof. Indeed the timing involves ripping out vines long before the season ends. Most growers can't be trusted to follow the necessary protocol Who can blame us??

The various Trichoderma based fungicides are completely ineffective once Fusarium levels become this bad.

One of the SFI bosses in Corvalis swore the he and Elaine Ingham had a special recipe for Aeorobic Compost Tea that controls Fusarium. I offered to test his "secret recipe" but he faded into oblivian.

Joe my stumps are fine, leaves on the other hand..........

Had the same problem in 2005 like this year, every year in between was fine. The other thing is seems like everyone around here is having the problem this year.

dpriceute, some of my leaves on my 763 plant did exactly as you stated "turn brown and then mushy near the base and then fall over." I cut a few at the base and water poured out also.
I only had this on one plant, will this spread though the soil ?
