i see one way to keep them away is to build a fence around the pumpkin with something like a silt fence. can i use vinegar, our use water bottle around garden, have heard that this works, but have not tried yet. just looking for ideas other than fence.

Cats are not a problem in a pumpkin garden. Unlike their arch enemies the Dog, they normally step lightly and are on the prowl. A method to get rid of them would be using one of them motion activated sprinklers that look like a crow.

I had a really horrible time with one cat this year. It killed thousands of seeds/seedlings in my front.
One familys cat cost me a lot of money trying to get rid of it. That family should feel lucky they still have a cat.
I tried the hottest ceyenne pepper powder I could find, I tried repellent, I tried planting highly scented plants(suppose to repel cats).
None of it worked except when I cut my thorn bushes let them dry and put those around the garden where I didn't want the cat.
People suggested putting chicken wire down, so the cat could not scratch the dirt, then take it out when plants are big enough.
I can't see where a cat would do damage to a big enough pumpkin plant.
I can see if you were planting seeds directly outside where they could dig them up.
If you are planting seeds outside and you have cats just put some dry sticker bush pieces around where you planted the seeds. Cats don't like sticker bushes.

Duke the Boxer Dog does a fine job with the cats. His leash keeps him out of the pumpkins.

My cats have learned that a dirt clod thrown at them works pretty good. Now they just lay there nicely and watch the plants grow. I am a cat lover dont get me wrong, but my patch is not their litter box.

Grasp two by tails. Tie square knot. Toss over clothes line. Record the proceedings for playing in patch if others show up.

The B.B gun works good, just a couple pumps and they get stung and stay away, not intended to hurt just detour, but they still sneak in at night and use the sand as a litter box, still working on that one ,tried mothballs, this year a have a heart set out at night, with no bait, will have to wait and see!!

Night time offenders require a different approach. Miller's Hot Sauce. 400 times stronger than a cayenne pepper. Dumb cat will sneeze it whiskers out as it goes butt over head running back home. Works on sqirrels & nosey neighborhood kids too. - Steve

I had a cat eat 4 of my plants last year! I was using fish emulsion, guess it could smell it on the plants, thought they were a funny looking fish. It was a stray, he,s not around this year.

I had terrible cat problems in the past and finally found the perfect solution. I bought an ultrasonic-motion-activated pest repeller. It has several settings / frequency ranges. Works for dogs, cats, squirrels, possums, raccoons, and believe it or not even armadillos. I bought it on line from Charleys Greenhouse. I think it cost $60 bucks. Two "D" size batteries run it, and last for a full growing season. It is worth it's weight in gold in my opinion, and TRUELY works.

Hey Booth, try 12 dogs! My cat won't dare venture outside.
Too bad I can't use meat eaters manure or I'd be set :0)

P.S. Electric fencing quickly reforms diggers.

Along those lines, our patch is adjacent to our garage. On the garage is a $20.00 Home Depot motion sensitive dual lamp flood light. I have turned the motion sensor toward the patch. One socket has a 200 watt flood light aimed at the patch. The other one has a do-jigger screwed into it that any standard 2 pronged AC cord will plug into.
While I haven't had the need to get creative yet, it seems there could be any number of noise or motion generating devices one could plug in to deter the night visiting vermin including cats. It doesn't work during the day though. If needed, I plan to plug in my 100 watt Boom Box tuned to the local Thrash/Alternative Metal station.

If things get really ugly, I'll wire a weather proof motion detector into the house alarm. That way if we're away, the local police will respond to patch intruders. Westec Pumpkin Patch security at it's finest!

Tremor, if your pumpkins will grow too fast, the motion sensor might cause false alarm and police will charge you:-)

CHINA KING is a franchise. Maybe they could be a part of the need to clear the cats out of your neighborhoods.
