In the past I have just went off instinct and ended up paying for it later. I plan on applying some Bayer Tree&Shrub (1.47% Imadacloprid) this week. Does anyone know the correct amount per gallon as a drench and can I apply to the bigger leaves yet, or will just a drench work to get the systemic protection? The plants are just starting to vine and there is no mention of mixture ratios for pumpkins.

Thanks

Thanks Don, where I am confused is if I apply it to the 1000 square feet of the patch as suggested, but my plants are roughly 4 square feet right now, won't most of the insecticide be leached away by the time the roots grow into it a month or 2 from now? Has anyone ever applied as a foliar? Thanks

just like fishing how and what in april/may might not be how you catch in august

you adapt. water area 6 foot circle. then in 3-4 weeks 15 foot circle then another 3-4 weeks big area were roots are
so plant can take it up thru soil
still wondering why buy 98.53% water in the blue jugs of t/s

Thanks again, Don. I killed one plant last year (rookie year) by not dilluting enough and am paranoid of making the same mistake again this year with good seeds\plants. As for jugs of Bayer T\S with 98.5% water, I buy light beer too, so it is just a habbit.

Info from Don's link (from Tremor), and then the rate I calculated for 80 sq feet to start with for first application:

"All Imidacloprid formulations are produced using technical grade Imidacloprid that is manufactured by Bayer CropScience. The asterisk* denotes a version not labeled for use on cucumber, squash, pumpkin, etc. But pumpkins can't read. All rates are calculated per acre first. Then I'll divide by 43.56 for the rate per 1000 sqaure feet.

It is best to apply Imidacloprid a week or two prior to planting out in at least 2 gallons of water per 1000 square feet then water it in slowly without puddling. This will control Cucumber Beetles, SVB, & Aphids for about 90 days.

Then repeat the same drench application also watering in at 90 days to cover the rest of the season.

First the Flowable liquid formulations:

Bayer Tree & Shrub*........1.47% Imidacloprid 233-350oz/acre
Bayer Merit 2F*...........21.40% Imidacloprid 16-24oz/acre
Bayer Admire 2F...........21.40% Imidacloprid 16-24oz/acre
Bayer Provado 1.6F*.......17.40% Imidacloprid 20-30oz/acre

Now the various Wettable Powder formulations:

Merit 75WP*...............75.00% Imidacloprid 6.4-8.6 oz/acre
Merit 75WSP*..............75.00% Imidacloprid 6.4-8.6 oz/acre
Provado Solupak*..........75.00% Imidacloprid 6.4-8.6 oz/acre

So........

Bayer T&S.....................5.35-8 oz per 1000 square feet
Merit 2F...................10.3-15.4 ml per 1000 square feet
Admire 2F..................10.3-15.4 ml per 1000 square feet
Provado 1.6F...............12.8-19.3 ml per 1000 square feet
Merit 75WP & 75WSP..3-4 level teaspoons per 1000 square feet
Provado Solupak.....3-4 level teaspoons per 1000 square feet"

I plan on doing roughly 80sq feet for the first drench so 43,560/80 = 544.5.

233-350oz / 544.5 = .4279oz - .64279oz or roughly 1 tablespoon for the 80 square foot drench. Thanks again.

I think its easier to pick up at local hardware,I wouldnt treat such a big area soil drench at edge of root system every 3 weeks, has worked good for SVBs.I did 2 teaspoons per plant in pots & watered in, did the same on seedlings in the ground Granular form!!mine was 1.1%

Hey Luke,

This will be my fourth year using the Bayer T&S 1.47 or comparable items.

I will do a soil drench for the first time right around the end of may, the application rate will be 4oz of 1.47 Imidacloprid I mix this in with about 4 gallons of water and drench about a 3 foot circle around the base of the plant.

I will continue to drench every 30 days, for the rest of my drenches I use 5 oz of Bayer T&S 1.47 Imidacloprid. as the plant gets larger I will Increase the drench to about a 4 foot circle and will drench down the main a little ways where the tab roots are. I did a 6oz drench of the 1.47 in about 6 gallons of water to a 550 sqft plant with no issues.

I never tried drenching the whole plant with this stuff, just seems to me like it would either take a lot of product or it would be way to diluted to be effective. I don't know how the vascular system of a pumpkin plant works, so I really don't know if by drenching the base area if it will trans-locate throughout the whole plant or not but it will apparently for trees and shrubs which it is labeled for.

Note: I have read not to apply this stuff to the roots of the soil is really dry, you want to make the applications i listed above to a moist soil.

I combo the Bayer T&S soil drench every month with a foliar spray of ortho-max (Bifen) I foliar spray this every 7-10 days starting in June when the hoops come off. I foliar spray this in the evening, don't apply this when your plant is still in the hoop, I try to avoid the vine tip when applying.

This Insect prevention program works great in my area.

Good luck!

Thanks a ton P Picker. That's what I was looking for; someone with past experience. I'll be more confident when I apply it now I'm not going to fry the plant.
