That sounds like some of the leaves froze. I had a watermelon in a hoop house last year that had a few of the top leaves freeze. They turned black very fast.
Did you have some very cold weather ?
That watermelon plant pulled out of it just fine.
I went through some of the diaries but did not see yours. Could you post the link so we can see a picture?

I hope it is not corn seed maggots. I saw your diary and it is showing symptoms of several plants I lost two years ago. Dig away the soil around the stem and look closely for anything moving.

Did you harden the plant off? If you bring from indoors out the UV rays will kill the old growth,

Bill after seing your pictures it looks like frost, or really bad UV burn. Has anyone sprayed anything?

well 2 plants are doing fine, but the 3 that are bad have clear plastic over the hoops, and the other 2 have a more opaque . or how ever you spell it. since its so wet i sprinkled grub ex in the house, and about 2 cups of hard fertilizer. today the center leaf still seems green. dang shame to lose a 1161 and a 985 to something i did wrong. just going to baby them and see what happens. i still have one 1161 left in the geneticts patch to pollinate with..

Could be a chemical burn...never fertilize inside the hoop...I would start back ups if you have not already...continue to baby the plants since the main still seams to be alive..they might make a come back

pumpkineer, i dont use corn meal so i dont think its corn maggets. i think my problem is either to much ferts all ground. to much rain, or grub ex to close to the plant base. all this rain changed how i normaly do things. i think i screwed up, just hoping for the best..... thanks for all answeres...

Hi Bill My best guess would be salts (from fertilizer) A plant that is overloaded on salts will look OK on a cloudy day or at night. But as soon as the sun comes out will wilt and possibly scorch (like yours) The opaque plastic blocks more of the UV light than the clear, which is why the plants in the opaque cold frames did better. I have learned this from personal experience as I nearly killed all my giant melons last year. I cut out off the ferts and I gave them enough water. They pulled through. Hopefully yours do too.
