I was burring my vines today and notices a snail or slug.Is there anything I can use to get rid of them and do they do damage to the plant? Any help will be appreciated since I am a first timer. thanks

HI, You can buy something at the nursery for the slug and snails. They have never bothered my Pumpkins but have raised hell with my stringbeans when they first come up.
Just to make sure I would get something to get rid of them,

Hi Kim,

I believe for snails or slugs, if you don't want to use pesticides you can throw down some pine needles or sand and make a circle around your pumpkins. The snails and slugs don't like to go across it because of the texture.

Hi Kim,
Last year I harvested 117 pumpkins in my garden and I did have some problems with slugs and snails in my garden. When the pumpkins start to mature the slugs will crawl to the bottom of the pumpkin and eat their way into the pumpkin where the flower used to be on the pumpkin. When this happens the pumpkin will get very soft and mushy on the bottom and eventually it kills the pumpkin and it rots. You can go to your local garden center and ask for a product called SLUG-EM. This product works very well but if you want to use a home remedy that works very well, try putting some low plastic containers filled with beer all around your pumpkins . For some strange reason the slugs are attracked to the beer and they crawl into the plastic container and die. You will find this meathod very effective.
