Hello fellow growers, I have a questions regarding Systemic Insecticides. First of all the only 2 kinds that I found in my area were Orthene and DiSyton. On the bottle of Orthene it did not have directions for dilution and watering frequency. DiSyston's directions was to work it into the soil then water. Does anybody use Orthene and can you give me how much to use per plant? When sould I start watering with a Systemic? and how often should I apply a Systemic Insecticide? Last year I had 5 plants total in 2 differant patches and I could not keep up with the Sevin spraying to kill all the SCB's. This year I have 9 plants in 4 differant gardens and I will probably have to quit my job to keep up. any info you have would be great........Thanks Dean o

Orthene (acephate) is a foliar penetrant. Whereby it will penetrate the foliage & move around somewhat after it does. It doesn't move far. The vascular system won't "feel" the effect. Orthene doesn't move well as a soil applied systemic, so it's not labeled for this use.

Disyston works on the same idea as Merit where it can be applied to the soil & watered in. The roots then absorb & translocate the material throughout the treated plant. They also have some local penetrating properties like Orhtene. But watch it here. DiSyston is usuall an "EC" (clear amber-brown liquid) formulation & can easily harm tender foliage especially when it's warm.
Merit, which is similar in Mode Of Action (MOA) is not an EC & therefore a little less "hot".

What about DiSyston granular? Would it work? I don't know if its labeled for this or not.

Yes, the Disyston is in granular form. This is going to be my first year using a systemic. What are most of you guys using on your pumpkins?(name brand). How often do you apply it?...... Thanks Dean o

I have used Orthene with good results against the SVB. I used the standard dillution rate on the bottle, about every 10 days if I remember correctly. It protected well against SVB and squash bug, but not against cuke beetles. For those I used Sevin about every 14 days, depending on weather & beetle population.

Thanks to all that responded(even blk cloud-I should probably thank him three times because it sounds like he has at least that many people in his brain)Ha!Ha! I probably will stick with Sevin again this year for the battle with the SCB's. Merit sound's real good and just what I was looking for but maybe I'll try it next year. I just ordered a real cool stainless steal garden duster. It holds over a pound of powder and It should work a lot faster than the panty hose and stick method I have been using. Good luck to all this summer....Dean o
