Is it safe to spray the fruit and stem with a pesticide ? The cuke beetles like to crawl under my sheets and chew the crap out of my fruits. They especially hang out near the stem and shoulder area.

This is a day 60 plus fruit, the skin is well aged.

Normally I use moth balls for the purpose of keeping mice away from the fruit. I will put a ring of moth balls around the base of the fruit with a sheet over it that draps to the ground. Happen to notice it was also killing alot of bugs as well under the sheets. Just don't breath in the fumes from the moth balls. Let it air out before working around the fruit.

I have the same problem maybe garlic barrier would work. It works for leaves why not the pumpkin itself? I am going to try it.
