how long does it take when it lays its eggs to turn in to a larva?

According to this source it takes 7-10 days. That sounds about right as I recall.

I was reading up on these buggers last night. It said they emerge at 1000 growing degree days. Which is also the time that chicory blooms, a common roadside or field weed here.

Tremor- I just seen it flying (SVB) around my patch. sprayed him in the air with sevin! (that all teachem!)

Hey shtick, Growing Degree days (GDD) are heat units used as an index to measure pest development during the growing season. Growing degree days pests are calculated by taking the average of the maximum and mimimum temperatures, measured in degrees Farenheit, each day, and then subtracting a base of 60 degrees F. from that temperature. All positive numbers that result are added to the previous days' total to get cumulative GDD's.
Do a search on yahoo for Niagara Falls Growing Degree Days.. There are different bases for different plants. Some use 50*F some use 60* F.
If we were commercial farmers we would not want to be wasting costly spray. Your County AG Agent or Extension office should have more info. Shannon

That is interesting. As of June 30, this part of CT was at about 807 GDD. Perhaps this is why I still haven't seen any. I hadn't been paying any attention & honestly forgot to keep my accumulated GDD's up to date (normal for me this time of year). As I recall, we were at about 1000 this time last year. Crazy weather.

Spraying them in flight is even more fun with Wasp & Hornet aerasol spray. It works so fast you can watch them fall from the sky (pbi synergized permethrin). Really good for the growers ego! Just don't get aerosols on the plants! The carriers & propellants are toxic to the foliage.
