I set out my SVB traps this past weekend (unbaited) primarily to air them out. Been catching notable numbers of cucumber beetles and various other pests...and this is mid March?! I'm starting to think that the lure really isn't necessary for these traps.....

Yeah, I sure picked a hell of a year to grow organic. Insects already in full force including skeeters.

You can't beat floating row cover for effectiveness if you are going organic.

If there are more bugs there will be more bugs that eat those bugs.

Yes Wiz, the traps are yellow (base), the tops are green. I think I'll forego the SVB lure this year to see if the traps alone will still attract them. As far as I know, the lure may repel them?! I've caught plenty using the lure though.....

I kind of thought so... I have used my own yellowish...card stock...put on sticky stuff...and placed in my patch on a stick....It does such a great job....I have started to uZe it also to capture insects when I fly fish to see whatZ out there....workZ wonderful....

Row cover is nice even if you aren't going organic. warms the air and soil, keeps out bugs and protects from fall frosts. it comes in 30 and even 50 ft wide rolls. Handle with care though, it is not a tarp and will tear.

Ben, if it heats the soil and air, I need to avoid covers. It is way too hot here with indexes above 110 through out July and Aug. Plus, I have tons of vine borers already in the ground which would just trap them under the covers.

Luke, you are right on about trapping the vine borer adults under the cover when they emerge from the soil. That happened to me the first year I used row cover. The plus side of that is that they couldn't escape my wrath - I quickly tracked down and killed each one as they appeared (before they could mate) and haven't had a single one since. The heat under the cover can be an issue though, on a 100 degree day it is hard to breathe inside my domes.
