Check out North Shore's dairy. He has one, but will be okay. They are fairly common but need to be kept dry to prevent rot. Put some Captan or a fungicide on it. I also treat them with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab. This works well with pumpkin stem rot and splits too, and was advised to me. I had one slpit early last year and the plant made it till October.

Captan isn't bad for it but it can clump if it's seeping at all. Sulfer powder is the best for drying out splits if you can find some. Never clumps and keeps the area dry.

Thanks for the input guys ... much appreciated !!! I had captan on hand so I dug down all the way to the bottom of the split and loaded it up with captan ...I will definitely be on the lookout for sulfer powder too ... the split is vertical with the grain and is all the way through but I don't believe it's leaking .. hope it'll make it ...other than that the plant looks fine ..

Oh no !! Mine is still growing so I hope it'll make it .. Once the split dries up I wonder if it's ok to cover with soil again or does it have to be kept dry for good ?? Good luck !! I feel your pain !!

Brian, while not ideal...it is not anything to worry about. Get some powdered sulphur and dust it on with a small paint brush, and keep it dry. I'm keeping mine exposed and not covering back up with soil so that it will stay dry.
Mine has healed up and is starting to scar and toughen up like they always do.
