I am relativity new to giant pumpkin growing. Last year I had a terrible SVB problem before I realized what was going on. This year I am prepared with contact and systemic insecticides. I also purchased a great SVB trap. Since putting the trap out out several weeks ago, I have caught over 100 SVBs. Came home from being gone for about two days and had 38 since Friday. Has anyone ever caught this many?

Hi Oster-
What type of trap are you using?
Do you have one or multiple traps?
How many plants are you growing?
Great job on all the catches and that is 100 less in and around the plant;-)

I'm currently growing two plants, but will cull one any day now because of space. I am using just one trap and lure from extremepumpkinstore.com. Very pleased with the purchase.
These next two weeks will tell how good my SVB control program has been as I feel the brunt of the SVBs are flying around Minnesota right now. This pumpkin growing is stressful, but boy do you learn a lot your first several years.

Last year I had over 158 when I stopped counting in August.I have neighbors with vegetable gardens. They have no idea what a SVB is so I guess I'm getting there overflow. So far this year I'm at about 25.It's still early.Does anybody know how many babys one svb can produce in its life span??

I've caught two in total. I should be happy but given numbers from grower south of me I'm wondering why only two.

Does anyone know the range of the SVB? I assume it is quite far, I kind of think(with no actual knowledge of course)that a majority of those guys had a meal on last year's pumpkin and overwintered on my property. I found endless exoskeletons from them emerging. Crazy to think that my kin didn't totally die last year with that kind of infestation.

Hi Oster-
Thanks for the replies to my questions. Looks like SVB can fly about 1/2mile. Here is a good resource for SVB information:

About 3 years ago I had between 240 and 250 dead body SVB moths at seasons end if I remember correctly .

After last season's first ever contact SVBs, this year I bought mine from extremepumpkinstore.com and I highly recommend them. I've caught about a dozen with my two traps, hopefully they went in the traps before laying eggs.
