Hi Wiz-

My suggestion is to cut out and remove the infected vines and spray with an Aliette or similar product. Also, favor keeping plants on the dry side. If you are aggressive and remove what is infected you might be able to stop it. I have prevented the spread of this disease but if you are not aggressive in the early stages it will be a complete loss.

If part of a secondary is showing symptoms remove the entire secondary, if the 1st two secondaries are showing signs, cut the first three off as this disease acts quick (hours) so you have to be quicker.

The actual fungus can swim so water control is also important. If you add water you are making it easier for the fungus to spread. Best of luck and hopefully you caught it early enough to get some level of control.

I did enormous amounts of vine cutting to try to stop phyto. I would cut it out and back it would come. I was able to find a product at my local old school feed mill/hardware store called Banrot, it is a systemic fungicide that works pretty good. Two applications has gotten me to a manageable level. Now, it will set in partially on a leaf then dry up. For the first time all year my freak is putting on clean leaves. In fact I have routed new vines back into the center of the plant. This will be a disaster later in the season but it is a way to get more good leaves in 750 square feet.

Hi Wiz-

I have seen it start in random places at times. Yes, it can start at the crown, but other times a random secondary goes down. Looking at your diary pictures I am not favoring phytophthora because the leaves do not severely wilt and dry-up in hours.

There are many other potential problems that could occur, but if they are wilting and coming back to life at night then there is a water transport issue. From the pictures you have posted it is hard for me to tell where the actual problem is, so if you could add in some more details I will do my best to help you out.

I agree about the water transport issue....I have cut my watering in half...as the soil has been saturated and temps HOT. In the morning the plant lookZ OK, leaves cupped. But after a day of sun, leaves are dull, a dark olive green. SInce it affects the entire plant I have to think its stump related.... Tugged on it it moves some but is still well attached 3 days ago. Center leaves on the stump are loosing color and dying like they do from being wilted back and forth. Anasa wilt comes to mind....squash bug city out here....Hard to spray insecticides cause we got bee hives around....
BiZ is loosing his 980 to yellow vine it appears his is different doesnt wilt, My 904 Stelts too is going down yellow vine.
This is a great website here for pics....they even got a death by lighting picture.....on a pumpkin.I love this website

Could be pythium, it has similar symptoms. Too much watering can bring it on. Alliette and good drainage help. Also a cover crop of brassicas, such as dwarf essex rape or groundhog radish will have a natural alleopathic effect to reduce soil borne diseases. After a year of total wipeout, I dug drainage ditches, planted rape and used Alliette the next year and got a personal best.

How much Alliette do you guys use per gallon as a prevent (I use 1 1/2 Table Spoon), and do you use a little more when you find out you are getting the disease?

I used to be able to get Alliette at my local Garden center every year, but this year they don't carry it and I'm just about out of it.

Where is the best place you guys have found to purchase it?
