This has been the most drought I have experienced as a giant pumpkin grower and it is really taking its toll on the critters as well. Two days ago, I started noticing some major leaks in my drip tape. I had a few couplers to eliminate the leaks, but they showed up in real numbers today. It took me awhile but, after cutting out a really troublesome section and inspecting it closely, it had been chewed by rodents. The critters are really desperate for water. Tough year indeed.

I have a baby skunk coming at night and drinking from the soaker hoses.Saw him about a week ago when taking the trash out.His eyes were glowing and I thought it was one of the cats. Walked up on him and it scared the crap out of me.Lucky he didn't spray me,LOL.

Well, after thinking about a practical solution for the past few days, I've decided to provide the critters with water another way: run a valve and section of drip tape outside the patch fence and have it on from dusk to dawn.
Simply trying to eliminate the critters altogether would be an expensive option, as I cannot be there to kill them. Running an electric fence is out of the question as I have no power here in "the wild". Stay tuned.
