one of my shock absorber fruit has stopped growing, and i don't mind that, but now it's getting white splotches on it that are soft to the touch. i will cut it off soon, but is this a disease to worry about that could spread?

We have a "shock absorber" going down like this too. In our case it looks like Blossom End Rot. So i'm treating the plant to copious amounts of chelated calcium for fear of more of the same on the "chosen one". It's not contageous like a fungus. But it is a sign of a potential condition ie calcium deficiency.

But we're not yet sure that's what you have going on. So let's look at these links for some help with an accurate diagnosis.

see if anything here looks familiar. Then we can make good decisions about what might need doing. With all the rain around here anything is possible. Same thing there?

it hasn't rained much here lately at all. today we had the first significant rainfall in a few weeks. it has been humid off and on the past few days though.

nothing looks too familiar in the pictures. although it could possibly be the top right picture in the second link you gave. (beginning stages though, just the white spots) it reminds me of the the skin disease people get when they have splotches of unpigmented skin.

i haven't been putting on any calcium.

EEESH!!! The dreaded Michael Jackson syndrome?

How's about this? I culled this one today from my son's school garden.

It doesn't look like the blossom end rot I usually see around here. But then the weather hasn't been normal either.

What the heck was that?

Strange computer behavior on this particular website today. All I did was hey "Enter" twice to double space my way down the page & look what happened. Time to reboot maybe.

It might be Michael Jackson syndrome, but I looked at the link from the Chapel Elem. School and it looks like the picture. They are starting to get the black spots over the white splotches. The shock absorber on my other plant is getting it as well, and they both got cut off their vines today.

i had a bunch of pumpkins abort on me from blossom rot. same thing, first white spots, then black, then they turned brown and fell off. now the stems will not dry out and they are starting to rot! i put a little sulphur on them today. i will post the outcome after a few days. if you have captan powder it might work better. that would have been my first choice but i couldnt find any. canadian tire is the only choice i got for supplies when im in a hurry. (i live in a hick town. lol) im only a newbie at this so you should get a second opinion before you listen to any of my advice. that captan powder seems to be to pumpkins what duct tape is to canadians, lol. good luck.
