I am new to growing AG's and have not had a very good season so far. I have had an excessive amount of rainfall all season. I have a problem with the stump of my plant. It what looks like yellow puss oozing out of the stump. I applied Captan to it. I hope this will help. I would appreciate any suggestions. I only have this one plant and if it doesn't make it I guess I'll start early for next year. It is at 34 1/2 " at day 15.

All too often, the symptom you describe can indicate troubles with the dreaded Squash Vine Borer who may have made the hole that is oozing.

Please read this OSU fact sheet before taking any drastic action.

If you investigate & find this to be the case, post results here. Folks here who have extricated borers from the stem can help. There may still be some chemical options too if you're willing to get creative.

put a fan blowing on that stump to help stump rot! it will keep it dry.

I checked the stump and it was not mushy. It is at about a 90 degree angle and seems to be almost broken in two. This is also where the whole is.

Did you make any turns with the vine by trying to turn early in season? I did last year and had a twisted stump...Good Luck..J

Yeah that could just be an ugly stress crack. I've had a couple here even on vines I didn't try to move. No mains though thankfully.

I haven't moved the main at all. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what to do about this problem. What would happen if the main was lost. Would the whole plant die or would the secondaries be enough to keep it growing.

Your secondaries will keep it growing, although growth will not be as good.

If you are sure there are no borers in the stem, then the Captan dusting & a fan sound reasonable. Tend to all the secondaries (burying) just in case.
