I noticed oozing on the blossom end and also a split on the stem yesterday. I cleaned both and applied Captan. The stem split was probably caused by the vine roots not being removed. Its the only one I missed. What would cause this oozing on the blossom end?

A split there on the blossom end, would cause oozing. I'm fighting a blossom end split on a 600+ pounder with the help of many people here. clean up, apply captan again, and put a fan in front of area oozing, to help dry. Don't fertilize of try to push pumpkin for a bit and try to let it heal, then get her going again.

good luck!

I got one too, on a pumpkin growing very rapidly.
I added major calcium in a drench to the stump about a week ago, and the blossom end is oozing less but sap is coming thru the skin. I added more calcium (lots) this morning since it seems to be helping, lots of Captan too.

My pumpkin isn't growing fast only about 3 inches OTT per day. Would that be enough to cause a split on the blossom end.

a weak, thin wall could be the cause

I think it may be that start of cantaloping on your pumpkin? I don't think you have anything to worry about.

We have one oozing here on the stem. Just touch the dried exudate & it spritzes out under pressure loudly enough to hear it. Now that side of the pumpkin is slowing while the other is still advancing. These things are amazing aren't they?

skin cracks that heal over and the pumpkin ends up looking like a cantalope kinda.

Should I caulk the crack on the stem. It is 1/4+ wide and about 2-3 in long and goes from stem onto the vine.

I filled the crack with Captan is that ok or do I just dust it. Should I do the same on the blossom end?

No, I dont think you need captan for cantaloping, you would be there all day covering the pumpkin with it.

Sam,
Make a paste out of the Captan, takes just a touch of water. I spread mine on with a small 1" paintbrush. It'll do much better than dusting.
Do the stem and blossom both.....and keep it away from eyes and nose, nasty stuff.

i used sulfur. wettable type.

N-Trichloromethylthio-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboximide

Causes irreversible eye damage, harmful if dust is inhaled
Wash your hands afterwards!

But it works well.....

does it break down into the soil?

Well I think it worked, this mornig no oozing on the stem and very little on the blossom end. I might just get this baby to the end of the season afterall.
