I came out this afternoon and notice about a dozen leaves wilting away. So u started looking around and discovered that my main vine is really soft about a foot away from my stump. It is soft for about a foot or so. What should I do about it. Cut the main away from the stump and try to save my plant or am I pretty much screwed. My kin has been gaining about 4 inches a day ott. Any help would be awesome!!!!

Sounds like Squash vine borers.

Have you been burying your secondaries? If so try uncovering them to see if they are showing the same rot issue. If so the cause could be soil based and is probably a vine rot disease.

If buried secondaries look normal than SVB (squash vine borers) are a possibility but there is still the chance of it begin vine rot.

What plant is this showing on? (and are there any other plants showing this same sign?)

It is only on the 1807 Stelts. Yes I have been covering my secondaries. I will look in the morning if my other vines look like. I did notice the color of my main vine is yellow. Not green.

I have a similar problem but I checked and theres no squash vine borers. Weve had rain for 50 outta 60 days and had 8 inches of rain this week. A small sections soft I painted Daconil on it I think its just a little rot from rain. If anyones got any pointers let me know. Thanks

My experience is some plants are just prone to vine rotting. If it is only happening on one plant I would say it is just bad luck, but odds are there is disease pressure on the other plants also.

Yellow vs green vines are not necessarily an indicator of odds for vine rotting some are just yellow.

Matt is there any way to save the vine. I got a nice pumpkin set about 12 feet further on the vine. The rest of the vine is fine just about a 6 inch section. ill continue to paint daconil. Keeping it drys a issue we haven't had any sun here just rain.

Jason, have you tried sheltering the stump/soft area from rain, using sulfur, and using a fan for air circulation?

Last year I lost my plants to Bacterial Soft Rot. The vines tuned to mush..Cut it up and was verified by the university of Illinois. If you have this in your soil, the worst thing you can do is bury the vines..Use Kocide..http://www2.dupont.com/Prod_Agriculture/en-us/content/crop-protection/kocide-3000.html
It will help.
