After a week of brutal heat and heavy misting I got a cool morning to get into plant in several areas to check for powdery mildew starting to set up. I found one older leaf shaded by others with a small blotch. None others affected near it and so I decided to prune the older leaf. And low and behold an aphid community was getting in gear with over 100 mature adults and too many to count tiny babies. Both aphids and pm seem to get there start on shaded leaves. Not a bad idea to start inspecting undersides of leaves...especially the older ones or those that fell below leaf canopy and get shaded by surrounding leaves.

The powdery mildew is on the lilac trees in Vermont. That means the powdery mildew is coming for the pumpkins. This year I started spraying BEFORE the lilac leaves turned white. Hopefully I will dodge the bullet this year.

Thanks for the heads up.

You are lucky to have such a delay;-)

Aphids noticed around here on MAY 23rd

I also found some Powdery Mildew on JUNE 30th

Overall spread has been at a reduced rate considering the prolonged period of high humidity we have had here in Southern New England. It has been a challenging year for many growers for sure. (I have the list of e-mails to prove it;-)

After futher inspection I found 3 hot zones of rapid aphid reproduction. I combined stylet oil with demand cs (same as warrior) and thoroughly sprayed with a scrubing motion on undersides of infested leaves. Stylet oil is supposed to help infested leaves recover and coat soft shelled aphids and suffocate. I have never mixed the 2 products together and will see how leaves react. The majority of the aphids looked pale and dead on the treated areas this morning with a few live ones that made it through treatment. I will report in my diary if there was a photoxicity or burning of leaves from the mix. Stylet oil also known in Canada as Clean Leaf is great for spot treatment of powdery mildew. It loosens the attaching mechanism of PM and with a jet stream the PM washes off the surface. For those who want tosee what a severly coated aphid leaf looks like...check out last picture of my diary.

I had to spot treat some of my leaves with stylet oil the other day. Great stuff.
