There are squirrels and one rabbit roaming the backyard but I haven't seen them do any damage with these vines - but I could have missed them while doing it. It appears they are doing it "just for fun" maybe. Any ideas? Thanks

Overall the site the plants are growing in looks like it is inducing some plant stress do to limited area, competition for light and competition with other plants.
The severe damage appears to be physical with squirrels probably biting the vines for some water and just because it is something different. I have not had rabbits do any harm to a pumpkin or pumpkin plant even though they like to use the leaves for shade/protection.
