Wizzy-I think the bugs did great last year cause of all the heat-were paying the price of all the adults that overwintered successfully.

Add me to the list probably hurt by the sb's. I wish I would have taken pictures of the damage. I have yet to see a picture that matches. Same symptoms two years in a row. Right after the arrival of the squash bugs. Only have seen 3 so far but one of those I think was evil. Still waiting for svb damage. Have caught 50 in one trap, all attacking one plant.

Wiz- You can use Zucchini plants to your advantage as there is a system called trap cropping.

Here is a good resource with some details:
http://www.extension.org/pages/61596/stink-bug-management-using-trap-crops-in-organic-farming#.UfrO6W3_h94

What this basically involves is putting a favorable plant around the perimeter of your garden so the bugs not only go there first but prefer to stay there. Then you can come though and control this perimeter region and as a result reduce the sink bug population on your giant pumpkins. Near the top of the food list for stink bugs is Hubbard Squash as well as straight neck summer squash such as 'Lemon Drop' so these might be worth a perimeter planting. However, Atlantic Giants are also high on the list if I remember correctly, not at the top, but close.

Also, since you are dealing with something that can easily be seen with the naked eye this offers ease of monitoring and also the option of a physical barrier like Remay that would offer 100% control with no need for insecticides.

I must have caught them early and got lucky. Killed some by hand, picked eggs off the underside of leafs, sprayed with Bifenthrin and Merit. Haven't seen a squash bug sense.

Did exactly that Matt.... put out 6 crooked neck squash....around the patches..... And the bugZ did come....

Sprayed weekly Warrior II, liquid Merit, plus granular merit early in the season...on me AG's Hand picked over 30 SBugZ 5 feet from the AG's. Finally Zapped the magnet aZ they covered it......with eggZ.... Made me come up with a new shirt for the club.... FuKZ'em BugZ

WE must not get them bad here, have not seen one yet. Vine borers are the worst I have had since I started growing. Maybe the great weather compared to last year set all the bugs off.
