How long should one let the main vine grow beyond the pumpkin? All Secondaries are dead headed and the main is growing about 1 1/2 feet per day.

what is causing the small droplets of amber colored sap mostly coming from the top of the pumpkin in the general area of the stem. Is it important, is there anything I can do to prevent it?

I'll take a crack at this. As to main vine: some people let them go about 6-8" past the pumpkin, some people cut it off at the pumpkin. I cut mine off, BUT not till I'm damned sure the pumpkin has set and is going to grow on.
The amber sap:
I have had this happen on and off again w one of my pumpkins I call "the egg", so far it hasn't amounted to a thing...but this pumpkin 'sweats' a lot anyway. I do not know if it means nothing major, or that it means something major and I've just gotten lucky as hell.

Sorry, that should have been 6-8 feet, not inches
