i sprayed my plants yesterday with a residual/contact spray by the name of thiadon(active chemical is endusulfate) that my extension office said would kill the vine borer moth. i really doused the plants heavily underneath the leaves and on top. i used the correct amount of mixture according to the label directions, but this morning i noticed that a majority of leaves have large irregularly shaped white spots, that when touched, feel like thin dried paper. also some of the new growth looks to be discolored. what happened? did i burn the leaves by putting on too much spray although i followed the directions according to the mixture ratio? clueless in the deep south.

Sounds like burn to me! I'm not sure that Thiadon will kill any borers that may already be in the vine.

I had the same problem when I used a mixture of chemicals, specifically methoxychlor, malathion, rotenone & pyrethrin. The amount of water was never increased to match the increased # of chemicals. It seemed the worst in crevices on the leaves where it may have puddled. A day or 2 later it looked like paint peeling off--the green looked like it lifted right off the leaves in those spots and looked like "waxed paper" under it. Did you use a spreader-sticker additive so it flowed/spread out without running off or puddling?

Now whenever I spray, I add about 1/4 teaspoon of Bonide Spreader-Sticker and throw in some liquid fish & seaweed in the mix. BTW, those leaves never completely recovered and look like an insect attack. Will try to take some pics...

Would spraying at night minimize the problem ?

yo Greenhorn,
If you spray when the sunshines the little droplets on the leaves act like magnifying glasses and concentrate the suns rays on the leaves, which in turn burns them. Doing this on dull days is much better or late at night when the sun is lower in the sky.

PROS,

I THOUGHT IT WAS BURN. I SPRAYED REALLY HEAVILY AND IT PUDDLED UP ON THE LEAVES. THE SUN WAS PRETTY HIGH IN THE SKY TOO I THINK. THE "WAXED-PAPER" LOOK HITS IT RIGHT ON THE HEAD!KILR, YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT THIADON NOT AFFECTING ANY BORERS IN THE VINES. I AM JUST USING IT IN CONJUNCTION WITH TTHE IMIDACLOPRIDE PRODUCT. THE THIADON IS MARKETED BY THE "HIGH-YIELD" BRAND( MAYBE A MISSISSIPPI THING?) AND IT CLEARLY STATES THAT IT KILLS VINE BORERS. I'M SURE THIS IS BEFORE THEY GET INTO THE VINE THOUGH. DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE SAFE TO SPRAY MY "IMID." CHEMICAL TOMORROW(TUESDAY)? ALSO WHERE CAN I FIND THAT BONIDE SPREADER-STICKER PRODUCT AT? SOUNDS LIKE I COULD USE SOME! THANKS!!!!

Greenhorn,

Any chemical burn has already been done, so I see no problem using "Imid." The spreader-sticker can usually be found at any larger greenhouse/nursery, I use it for both insecticide and herbicide.I don't know how much spray korney 19 is spraying, but 1/4 teaspoon sounds like a bit much, this stuff is highly concentrated and I use only a few drops per gallon or two. Also always check the labels, I believe that either the Imid or Scimitar already contains a "sticker".

kill 'em good!

I am using either a 20 gallon hose end sprayer or an Ortho Dial'n Spray, depending on which one I have to walk the "least-est" to get. Both have quick-disconnect fittings, so time is not a factor--walking is.

P.S. My girlfriend has always said I was lazy; now, she says I'm also OBSESSED.
