This plant is 27 days old. Transplanted outside and placed in a cold frame two weeks ago. I'm in the Midwest (IL) so it's been pretty cold (above freezing, barely). Growth was very slow. Five days ago I put a small heater in the cold frame and have been keeping temps around 80 during the day and 60 at night. I also sprinkled in a small amount of ammonium sulfate two days ago and watered.

Growth since then has been much better but now I am seeing brown edges on the main leaf. Should I be worried and what might it be?

First one is from three days ago, the second is from today.

the foes and follies of starting to early and to long in the pot.....never had an AG in pot mor the 8 days....it will more than likely recover...i would be willing to bet if you started another seed it would catch up to fast

Hmmm... I only had it in the pot until the first true leaf appeared. That was 13 days from the day I opened the seed packet so maybe I'm counting wrong?

Roots were barely touching the wall when I transplanted. Photo here:

Transplant Stunted Growth is going to happen with anything you plant from a controlled environment to outdoors that has a different climate. The Sun is 10 times brighter than any light out there. That is why in the hoop they get a lawn chair for shade. until they are starting to lay down. The cold soil locks up the availiable nitrogen, and other vital nutrients

Thanks, that is helpful information.

An update - growth appears to have accelerated a lot. The brown edge didn't get any worse but there are now two more leaves and they are growing fast. I'm guessing it was just a little fertilizer burn.

Well, I'm not sure everything is ok after all. Temps warmed up to almost 90 today (have consistently been in the 40s and 50s). If you compare this photo the one I uploaded yesterday, you will see the growth in the 2nd true leaf. However, it is curled and looks somewhat brittle and glassy.

Thoughts?

Has the glass thermometer always been there, could sunlight be bouncing off of it back to the plant, I know that sounds odd but who knows, try moving it and the decoration away from the plant.

It maybe hotter than you think, that type of thermometer may not be reading correctly

What have you added to the soil. What is the soil temp? Have you fed the plant anything

baitman - I think you might be on to something with the glass thermometer. I moved it.

Linus Van Pelt - I had a soil test last month and amended with a number of things: sulpfur, gypsum, borax, super triple phosphate, and potash. Used the team pumpkin to get as close to the ideal ratios as I could.

The plant has grown a lot in the past three days. The leaves look a little brittle but they are growing. Check out the May 10th, 2014 entry on my diary for the latest photo.

Mine always look like that, I think it's the peat moss seed starter that is low in ph and nutrients. When the roots reach out into the soil they look normal. The slow growth is because your soil is too cold, you need 70 f at least.
