Hi,

I have never had a large animal problem (besides our dog) but it appears asthough some squirrels are digging the soil around my pumpkin, and I am afraid that they might seriously damage my plants. Am I fine just leaving them be? Do I get a trap? Or is there a good repellent that I can use? Thanks.

Totally not being a smart butt......what about getting a squirrel feeder and some food and hang it between their point of entrance to patch and the patch? maybe they will take the easy way out and use the feeder to eat?

If you have a lot of worms in your soil, skunks will dig for them. You can try mothballs around the fruit, put rodent-killing blocks(poison) around it, bait rat traps or follow the advice above.

There are not many worms in my soil, as it is a new patch that I started preparing this winter. There are about 10 squirrels that I have seen, all of them in a pack, and most of them smaller than usual, so they seem to be breeding.

If you catch the Squirrel you can go to the site http://www.artofmanliness.com/2012/01/16/how-to-field-dress-a-squirrel/ on how to prepare them. Graphic content

Fox urine works on rabbits and groundhogs, so it might repel squirrels too. I get the stuff that deer hunters use to cover human scent.

Rat traps work, might be illegal to use, I have walnut ,hickory and oak trees in my yard so I also have a lot of squirrels, but I have never had squirrel damage maybe they just have to much to eat

Our patch has a huge number of black walnut trees around and am constantly finding trees that our farmer squirrels plant in the patch.I'ld like to beam those tree rats with those nuts especially when you hear them mocking you when you're bent over.
