Does any expert here use Isotox?
Does this stunt the plant at all and does isotox have any effect on seed germination the next year? And at what rate do you apply it. Is 4 Tablespons per gallon OK? Also does this actually eliminate the Squash Vine Borer for you?

Thanks
Clint

Well... didnt get any response so I went out and sprayed on 32 gallons of ISOTOX at 4 Tablespoons per gallon. Hope this doesnt stunt "Shannons" grow any as she is it 120 1/3 inches circumference at 22 days since pollination.

If it's a new bottle of Isotox, I don't think it will cause any harm. It contains the same ingredient as Orthene(Acephate), which I have used without any ill effects. If its an old bottle it may contain a different insecticide. --Bruiser

Bruiser,

Its a new bottle... isnt Isotox just Lindane. Why would the ingredients be different in an old bottle as compared to a new one? A small bottle of isotox costs $23.00 !
Since isotox is a systemic... it should get into the plant and kill the remaining borers right? Have you had any boress this year Bruiser?

Sorry about the late reply...been out a couple days. ISOTOX will do no harm at all . been using it 3 years with no problems. do not keep it year to year, if it freezes & thaws it changes the chemical make-up & could do extreme harm. always use fresh each year..Paul

Will applying the Isotox for the first time this year as I did last night begin to kill the borers now. If its too late to kill them as a systemic then hopefully some of the Isotox dripped into the borer holes and killed them that way. My borers ares till fairly small as well.

Well the Isotox at my local Home Depot is not Lindane, it is Acephate. I checked the MSDS on Ortho's web page and they list it as "ISOTOX Insect Killer Formula IV". If yours is Lindane, the next bottle you buy may not be. I suspect that Lindane may have been phased out, but I don't know for sure. By the way, Isotox is mentioned in Langevin's book as a systemic alternative, although I would wager to guess that Lindane was the active ingredient at the time the book was printed.

Using Orthene I have not had a problem YET, but the year is far from over. Since it is supposed to last 2 weeks, I have been applying Bug-B-Gone in the off week. This serves not only as a backup but also controls the cuke beetles better. Orthene is only $13 for the 16oz. bottle, and contains 9.4% Acephate compared to 8% in Isotox.

This is my 1st year using these controls, so I can't really say if they work. Only that I am using them and have had good luck so far. --Bruiser

Make sure you hit all the vines & leaf stems, just the leaves are not enough. With borers you need to get under the canopy for it to be effective. --Bruiser

The Systemic insecticide I have been using is "Admire". I used it last year and am using it again. I have been using 1 tablespoon per gallon every 10 to 12 days. I have not found any borer holes or aphids either year. It is very effective for Cuc bugs. In New York you need a permit to buy and use it............If you use a Systemic insecticide, you need to keep all male and female flowers removed or you will also kill bees.

Len,

I just started spraying Isotox about 10 days ago and it did kill the borers. The borers that I had in the Stump 6 weeks
ago have caused the main stump to rot about 75%. Only the Top and bottom part of the stump are healthy... but for how long. I will try Admire or maybe Warrior-T next year though.
The borers may have ruined my chance to break a world record. So far shannon is almost 700 lbs since she was pollinated on July 18. Now with the rotting stump... I think she wont.
