Finally I have caught the killer of many promising tomatoes, the trouble is that it's a skunk. How do you deal with a skunk in the trap without it spraying???

Spontaneous answer: It´s just a matter of "Who farted first?"

More helpful answer (hopefully): Check out this set of skunk removal safety clothes

Do skunks eat tomatoes? Can I be reasonably sure that this was the problem and not a coincidence where a groundhog is really the problem?

Put an old blanket over the trap so he cant see, then pick up
the trap, or what I do is take it to the park and dump him
there.

If the tail does not lift he can not spray...

I just had to deal with that situation. Slowly walk to the trap with a sheet or blanket and cover the trap. The covering will keep the skunk calm. Have a piece of bamboo handy to lock the door in the open position. Open the trap and slide the bamboo stick through the grating leaving the door open. The skunk probably will not leave until dark unless you remove the blanket. PS I doubt it is eating the tomatoes.

All good advice. I agree with Wilbur. I would be surprised if the skunk is the culprit. A friend of mine who is a trapper, told me that if I planned to relocate a skunk, I should move them across a river or creek. He said they will not cross to get back to your place.

relocating wildlife is against the law in most states, so beware of who sees you doing it.
