It looks like an ambush bug to me. It's a good bug for the garden. Never had one bite me though.

its an assassin beetle, they are good bugs. Will eat bad bugs, but according to this Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reduviidae
will defend themselves it threated.

"Large specimens should be handled with caution, if at all, because they sometimes defend themselves with a very painful stab from the proboscis."
