A small hole opened up right where the stem and pumpkin meet. It is about a inch deep. As long as it does not go into cavity is it ok or is it over. It looks dry In the hole. I don't know how this works. Thanks for help I am going to Anamosa on the 3rd.

Well it appears that the Midwest has different rules regarding disqualification than the rest of the world. But if that was at a contest I was judging you're okay.

As long as the hole doesn't get into the cavity, it will be OK. We had a couple last hear with stem splits that didn't go into the cavity. Just keep it dry, dust with sulfur or captan or paint it with sulfur so it doesn't start to rot. Just clean off all of the fungicide before you bring it. And they will have judges checking to see that it meets the rules. My son had one DQ'd several years ago because it split a little on the ride in and started leaking. Same thing happened to Don Young a few years ago.

The way I look at it is. If it wasn't big enough to be a contender for big money. Don't worry about it. A large pumpkin even damaged is still respectable. It takes a lot of work and money to get it there. Most of the times it's out of your control. Have fun and enjoy the ride. and there is always next year. I had 4 plants and ended up with one pumpkin at 454lb as the only pumpkin I got weighed. And yes as long as it doesn't get into the cavity you should be OK. Good luck.

Thanks a lot that makes feel a little better. It's not big about a half inch in diameter. 6 more days.

A stem split is pretty common Josh. Take a close look at the weigh-off, I bet there will be other pumpkins with stem splits too.

From the GPC rule book.
4) The specimen must be sound, healthy, and undamaged. Entries must be free of rot, holes or cracks through to the cavity, and serious soft spots. A) The Judges reserve the right to probe cracks, holes, and to dig out soft spots to judge a fruit official or not. Before the Judges can execute any of the previous they must have the grower present. B) A serious soft spot is one that is greater than 3 inches in diameter, and greater than 3 inches deep. The dimensions of the soft spot will be measured after all soft material has been removed with a spoon. C) If there are more than two soft spots that require material to be removed and measured, the pumpkin will be disqualified even if each is smaller than the definition of “a serious soft spot”. D) Judging is to be completed before a fruit is officially weighed.
