Not sure what to put on top of pallet, some materials can retain moisture and lead to rot, any ideas?

Why grow on pallet?

Easier to transport out of garden, rather than buying a lifting ring, and we already have forklift

Ah, this looks like 3 pumpkins and 3 pallets. Just kidding.

Hopefully this is more helpful now: What´s the weight of your pumpkin (which final weight would you expect)? For a pumpkin up to 1000 lbs this method should be fine if you don´t want to use a lifting ring (click through the photo gallery, there are 9 or 10 pics which explain this method of loading the XXXL-sized berry onto a pallet)

There should be an advantage of having the fruit 1/2 foot closer to the ground as it grows, you don´t need to raise the vine so far up, thus you can keep many more tap roots.

Would growing on sand be alot easier?

Sand is excellent, you can easily move the pumpkin if you need to, and the pumpkin can also move as it grows. Many (if not all) experienced growers grow their pumpkins on sand. In between (sand and soil) there is something like mill fabric etc. in order to have a barrier for mice but to maintain good drainage...you want to keep the bottom of the fruit nicely dry. That´s another advantage over the close contact between pumpkin and the wood of a pallet.

I'm w don...if you have forklift, grow it on the ground and use ropes/straps to lift and slide a pallet under it in the fall...especially if you get hooked into a good one ...
