I've had two plants die (or killed!) over the past two days. When I go to check them out, the trunk of the plant is severed as though it was chewed through. I dug down a little and it looks like a mole hole, and there is no sign of any roots. Can anyone identify this problem? And does anyone know of a solution? Thanks a million.

I put hardware cloth in the hole bottom and sides. I'll let you know how it works. We have voles and gophers. Don't want to use poison with dog and cats.

I'm a beginner with pumpkins (so I might not be correct) but the exact same thing happened to one of my best looking pumpkin plants about a month ago. I am almost positive it was cutworms. Google cutworm damage. Naturally it was the one day I took my tent off of the pumpkin and forgot to put it back on. It will most likely happen at night if it is from cutworms.
