this is the 2nd year in a row my plant has come down with yellow vine. i'm stuck using the same patch every year. is there something I can treat my patch with that will get rid of the yellow vine.

YVD is caused by squash bugs and only squash bugs ,as far as I know. They transmit some kind of bacterial infection that their is no cure for. So, you need to have a good spray program to keep them out.

I treated with merit many times this year. maybe what I thought is yellow vine is something else. what else turns the leaves yellow

Some vines are yellow through genetics.

If it is YVD and you want the best option to prevent the problem Insect Netting would be the only sure option. Insecticides may not work fast enough to stop transmission of the bacterial disease. Another advantage is would also serve as a wind barrier and protect against other insects.
There are many brands and types but the "ProtekNet Exclusion Insect Netting" works well in the fields I have seen it used. The important part is to make sure it is insect tight on all edges and corners all the time.
