The holes are about 5' out on the vine.

No frass in the pic, and likely too early for a hatch yet.

My guess would be some kind of animal damage.

I believe that is most likely from rabbits, I've list a few vines from them chewing on them. Clean them up and keep water out of them you might be ok. Hopefully it's not on your main.

Thanks Guys ...Andy I'm 2 weeks behind you and agree with critter damage..lots of crows in the patch...rabbits to but damage was thru and thru..no frass..I'm glad I didn't start operating with the weed whacker
