I am new to pumpkin growing, and I recently saw that my pumpkins vines were an infected yellow looking color at their base. I didn't think it was a problem, but then they started getting a little squishy and it's traveling up the vines. I know it's not a vine borer, but what is it? and how do I fix it?

I dont know about the squishy part but yellow orange-yellow dark green light greem and pale yellow are normal and the patchy look is natural result of the flow of minerals and sugars in the vine. Post pics...?

You should start a grower diary and post pictures there. The one you sent me on Facebook would be a start, but add some others down the vine. You have had a lot more rain in Cedar Falls than I had around here, so it is a good chance it is a fungal disease. Probably removing the diseased parts and treating the rest with fungicides might help. Some people recommend dissolving a couple aspirin in each gallon of spray to stimulate the plant's natural defenses. Don't wait too long to take action, as some diseases spread rapidly. Make sure you remove all vines and leaves this fall to prevent carryover to next year. Fall tillage wouldn't hurt. And if you lose a plant this summer plant a mustard or daikon radish cover crop to fight off any disease in the soil.

Looks like I was wrong, and it is in fact a vine borer. Thanks for the replies!
