I have a 1621.5 Kline 2019 ( 1911 Urena × 1911 Urena) that has a first true leaf. The leaf looks fine but after that there are 3 leaves growing beside each other for the 2nd true leaf. Is this an early sign of a ribbon vine?

Probably. But I had two leaves simultaneous on the 2174 Daletas this year and it did not form a ribbon. Maybe you can wait & see.

Okay, I was going to give it a spot, but if that's the case, I will plant a backup there instead.

Here's a slightly different question,
Why are ribbon vines bad? If the best main vines are thick, and strong, and the width has increased by ribbon vining, the are they not good?

Ribbon vines are bad because they are prone to doubling everything and are a double vine with no center rib for support and are eventually just a pain where a 'good' plant might have gone; A Double vine is one where the two vines are ATTACHED at the center and can sometimes (I have done it) be alleviated by removing ONE of the vines, the weaker or shorter or that is simply less desirable, like culling a fruit. I do not recommend a sharp, right angled cut which could nick the other vine and cause it to tear there - just a gradual, sloping whittling of the vine to be removed, with no nicks. Also, it might be advantageous to wait it out to the 4-6-foot length to see, but I guess you might not have that luxury - Good Luck---eric g

Ribbon vines are problematic but I wouldnt call them all "bad". Theyre good in that they are usually aggressive/vigorous plants. You should prune the main mutated tip and go with a secondary as your normal developed main. That costs time so its unlikely to get a target date pollenation on a target sized plant.

Okay, I have never actually had one and was wondering why it was bad, because I knew it was aggressive. I figured twice the vine size is twice the growth. However if each individual vine is separate, than that explains it.

There are normal vines, double vines, and ribbon vines. Double vines can be corrected, by pruning. Ribbon vines have to be removed and you use one of your good secondaries as your main

Shannon I always thought that double and ribbon vines were the same thing. What is the difference?

You are not on my ignore list, Thanks, I should read stuff more carefully. I learned something new today. I have not had a ton of experience with either double or ribbon vines. The few I have had, I would classify as ribbon vines based on your description,

Fortunately, I find most people on here to be respectful. No need for the ignore button.

Double vine is just that. the main splits into a double joined vine. Snip one and it normally recovers. Ribbon vines get flat, and look like a computer ribbon with multiple vascular systems and are hollow in the middle and continue to grow wider and wider
