It appears that moles have been making their way through my yard. What can I do to at least keep the pumpkins safe from them next year. I’d like to get rid of them completely, but I have 5 dogs and don’t want to expose them to anything dangerous in the yard. The pumpkin patch is a different story; they can’t get in there, so I can use different products there.

Thanks! Are they very active in the winter? Wondering if it would be worthwhile to put out traps now or just wait until spring.

Truckin; If you see new mounds, set your traps out. as far as winter I am not sure. I go by the new mounds and tunnels.
Happy hunting

For the past few years, I have had the best control of them when I trap them during the cold months even if the soil is slightly frozen. Maybe it was good luck but I had none in the yard this year during the growing season, usually it would be at least 5

I know this is old but I've also had big time moles in various parts of my yard even through the winter months. I installed some of those cheapish vibrator stakes around the patch and also where we had a lot of other activity. I haven't seen any new hills since doing that about a month ago.

I had moles way out in the yard last year but I'll have to peacefully coexist with them if they ever appear elsewhere. This was interesting reading, if nothing else:

This is probably shocking news to many but Moles are carnivores so they eat grubs, worms and stuff like that. Moles get falsely blamed for the stuff voles actually do. It is really voles you have to worry about in terms of eating vegetation. Moles may be a concern, but it is just by there digging activity possibly disturbing pumpkin roots etc, but they are not eating pumpkins or any vegetation.

Figure out if it is a mole or a vole. We had voles in the patch one year and used a pelletized castor oil and watered it in. They don’t like oily coats and they left patch alone.

Ive got both moles and voles and frankly the moles harm the pumpkin plants more than the voles since the voles have yet to show much appetite for pumpkin vines, whereas the moles slice the roots off with their tunnels. I dont have deep soil, so the depth of their tunnels is where most of my roots are trying to grow. Anyhow, I suggest getting an early start because it can take a few months to clear the yard of the last few smart/lucky ones. Some traps claim to be pet safe, otherwise you have to put a concrete block or something heavy and uninteresting, something that pets and kids wont be wrongly inspired move.
