What is the Best chemical for bugs that can be used on my patch. I worry about this cause i dont want it hurting my plants at the same time. All i neeed is something simple that i can buy at like Lowes or my local Co-Op, there is so many to chose from but i dont want to buy the wrong stuff. I also noticed last year in my garden i had alot of slugs,I have heard that putting a pan of beer down is a good thing to kill slugs. Will slugs bother a pumpkin plant?

Slugs -

Make sure you protect your seedlings.

Best bet is a slug bait type product.
I use Cory's slug and snail death - old english formula.
Ortho's product is slug-B-gone. There are many other options out there as well. Like sluggo etc.

Beer is a good option - if you want to WASTE a beer.

What other bugs are you refering to?
Main culprits are:
SVBs
Squash bugs
Cucumber beetles

well, the only thing that i have seen in my garden was slugs last year, but i was only messing around with hot peppers , green beans and tomatoes, the slugs seem to only bother the hot pepper leaves, as for other bugs, I really didnt pay any attention but wish i would have now. Is there a all perpose bug killer that kills all bugs i can use just to be safe?,Thanks for helping me on this.

Products I have used effectively for slugs and snails are: ESCARGO from Gardens Alive and Sluggo from other mail order sources. Both may be the same product. If so the snails get a belly ache and just quit eating. They then have a sexual problem as they expose themslves to the birds because they don't feel good enough to dig in and hide. If the birds do not get them the sunshine will. The product biodegrades to organic nitrogen for your garden. These two work as good or better than the chemical types. If you don't mind giving the snails a belly ache you can avoid this type chemicals in your patch this year.

Some of the more common insecticides that work well with pumpkin plants are: Sevin, Malathion, Triazicide or any bug killer with Perethrin in it. You should be able to pick these up at any lawn and garden center or discount store.

Be careful when spraying new growth as many insecticides burn young leaves. Good Luck...Dean o

I think the most widely used insecticide now among AG growers would be anything with the active ingredient Lambda-cyhalothrin. Warrior (T or Z), Suspend, Demand, Scimitar, Battle, & the consumer version Triazicide are trade names of the same exact thing in varying concentrations.

This is a contact synthetic pyrethroid of the advanced second generation.

Better still as far as contacts go is Bifenthrin, which so far hasn't really caught on among growers. Trade names are Talstar, Capture, Onyx, & Cross-Check. So far there is no consumer preperation. This is a true thrid generation synthetic pyrethroid. Kicks butt.

The only systemic worth mentioning is Imidacloprid. Admire, Merit, Provado, Marathon, & Gaucho are the commercial versions. Consumer = Bayer Tree & Shrub, Grubex (granular) & Bayer Season Long Grun (granular).

There is no one "best" insecticide. It's all about having the right tool at hand for the job that needs doing. Timing is also critical to picking the right tool.

I would contact my local agriculture experiment station or better yet, a local AG grower whose been at this a few years & find out which pests you're likely to encounter & when. Then form a plan that speaks only to *your* specific situation.
