All:
Here in West Michigan we often get the usual yellow striped (and sometimes spotted) cuke beetles we all know and hate. But this spring in my lawn I've seen what looks just like a spotted cuke beetle...only it's red - not yellow. (Shaped like a cuke beetle, not a ladybug) Anyone ever seen any little critters like that?
Frank

Is it a Bean Leaf Beetle?

Yep. That's it. Never seen 'em around here before. Seems to be a bumper crop in our area this year....

Then I would keep a very close eye on them. Being Leaf Beetles, if there are no Beans in the area to feed on, they may decide to feed on Cucurbita. In which case they might also be capable of tranfering viral pathogens to your plants.

Is there a good ag-school or state entomologist local to you for consultation?

Yeah, I'll have to inquire at the local co-op or the MSU extension office....
Thanks Steve...
