I was talking to a local farm/feed story guy about growing pumpkins. I mentioned that last year I thought I had a virus in my patch, that is what the county extention guys said, but they couldn't identify it. He suggested I could try CONSAN 20 as a preventative.

I found this information on it from Hy Yeild:
Consan 20 Fungicide
Formulation: N Alkyl ammonium chloride
Multi-use indoor and outdoor broad spectrum fungicide, algaecide, bacteriacide, sanitizer, plant viricide, disinfectant, deodorant and controls fire blight
For use on ornamental plants, orchids, grasses, plant cuttings and many other applications

Has anyone used this product ?
Would it help prevent a virus in pumpkins ?
any other thoughts ?

thanks,
gordon

Hey Gordon,

This material looks a lot like Zerotol in that it has no residual at all. I searched the list of active ingredients & found this:

Name: n-Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride

Application: For use by manufacturers only — in formulating microbicides, disinfectants and sanitizers, fungicides, water treatment microbicides (once-through fresh-water cooling systems) and wood preservatives.

So this stuff is mainly a sanitizer used like one would household ammonia or bleach. Though it is also labeled as a dip for cuttings, it still has no residual.

Since it can only kill a virus on contact, this material will onky work if the virus is found on tools, benches, etc. If a virus was vectored by aphids (the most common means) or is soil borne, then the sanitary approach would be of no use.

If you see this symptom again, get a live/fresh sample to a fully equipped pathology lab ASAP.
