I have a few ant hills about a foot away from one of my stumps. I gave them some Diazinon the other day. I was just wondering if there are any other tricks or treatments to get rid of them? They are the little orange/red colored ants.

KYGROWER

KENTUCKY

When i have had ants come into house, i've used the little round ant bait feeder stations that are poison from ortho. They carry the poison back to colony and eventually wipe out the whole colony. I've used them many times in the home through the years, and it has always worked for me. Takes about 5-8 days then I never see them again. Don't know if it will work outside, but works in home.

Ants are best controlled today with slow acting baits. The workers will collect the slow acting toxin & bring it back to the nest where it will ultimately kill the queen. The only problem with this tactic is presenting the colony with the corect bait. Sugar ants go for sugar. But others prefer dead insects. Still others prefer a cellulose attractant. Others prefer gels. The trick is knbowing which Ant species we're dealing with & keying that with the time of year & what food sources are available locally for them.

Diazinon granules kill lots of workers. But the queen makes more.

A tree fertilizing needle works well too. Pressures of 250 psi are good for blowing Talstar underground, hopefully flooding all the gallies including the queen's chambers. Once in the soil, Talstar lasts for 5-7 years. So no more ants.
