WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR

So. Maine

Go to Wal-Mart & get a 3-pack of road flares & use one as a smoke bomb. Use one if you see a chuck go into the hole otherwise you might be wasting it or go ahead and light one & put it in for piece of mind. Also check to make sure they don't have an emergency exit to get out. Each flare has a cardboard square to keep it propped up off the ground an inch or two. Light flare, set in hole & backfill but leave a small opening so oxygen can enter to complete the burn. I've used em a few times & find they work well. Go get em!!!!!!

Really need something a bit bigger than a pellet gun...goes right in them w/o much effect unless you hit something vital.

Get a live trap baited with sliced apple. Then get rid of it!(Some states forbid transfer of animals.)

Annual friggin battle here! I try to co-exist with nature but she tries my patience annualy! Whole yard is deer fenced. Patch is fenced and burried 1 foot. Small chucks can squeeze thru 2"x3" mesh fencing. 2 down so far, who knows how many more??? They're live trapped and given new zip codes. Checked out electric fencing today. Figuring on battling out this season and in the fall fencing with 1/4" mesh stock. They'll probably learn to climb then...LOL

Last year I had plenty of bees and wasn't bothered with the critters. This year I have yet to see a bee, how ever I am plagued with squirrels, rabbits, raccoon, deer and woodchucks. Haven't had much luck with my live trap and the city is very strict about shooting in town. Can't blame the animals, with all the building going on and their loss of habitat. It's in mother natures hands but I'll do what I can to discourage them.

THE BORER

Billerica,Massachusetts

George: welcome to my world!! ---- i've been battling these monsters for years! i trap them and drive them over to wilmington and release them, oh sorry! we were able to get rid of them before at a friends patch by poisoning them with lead 22 cal. per chuck was enough, however that is nolonger fesable in my current patch or in yours, bb/pellet guns will not kill them, fences help by slowing them down, but they will dig or climb over them, yes they do climb as i have witnessed it firsthand! you could try some gopher bombs available at the local hardware store, but keep in mind they usually will have more than one entrance to their borrows, so you need to block them both up, the car exhuast is a good way if you can seal up all the entrances, i also pour bleach down their holes, i'm sure they just love the smell.
good luck!!

You could also buy some smoke bombs made for woodchucks at your local gardening store. My dad gets them at Agway for around 3 bucks a pop. They do the job. After putting the bomb in, just cover the hole. Then if the hole is dug back out, you can conclude the chuck is still around. My dad has killed dozens of woodchucks every year down at our mass. farm. Good luck, they can really do terrible things to fruit.

Benjamin Sheridan says it can be done quietly at 1000 fps.

My old 397PA never fails when the .177 (.22 is too big) Pointed Pellets make the mark forward of the center rib cage. The head is even quicker. Pointed tips break bone cleanly.

I see the new 397s are only 800 fps. If 1100 fps is more your speed:

At 1250 fps, This Diana surpasses some rim fire 22 longs.

Check your local laws on a conibear trap. Land sets with a conibear in Wisconsin are illegal and will get you a thousand years in the electric chair with a low voltage. Especially when you catch the neighbors Dog, Cat or Child.

i'm sure stranger things have happened but..catching a child...maybe the children are different else where but around here the children have more sense than to go around sticking their arms down into ground hog holes.. you know i'm not scared of anything but i'm scard to death to stick my hand down in to a ground hog's hole..
