Planty

Small town in California heart land

This is the first year I tried to grow pumpkins. Two years ago I had some grow from jack-o-lantern guts...

So I made some mistakes that I know of. I planted 6 plants that all survivied. I have a huge mess that is growing up the fence and all over. I only had a small spot to grow them on the side of the house that is protected from the dogs and kids. It gets morning and midday sun but not the hot stuff in the afternoon.

I was all excited three weeks ago when I found some babys! I even took pictures. Well today I went out after a couple of really hot days (too hot to spend too much time looking around the vines) I kept them nice and watered during this heat. Sadly when I went to take some more pictures of my babys they were gone and now all that is left is a pile of ooze...? I have no clue as to what it can be? Too much water? slugs or snails? I didnt see any tell tail snail trails though.

Needless to say Im sad these were my first babys. I have a few more growing on the vines about the size of soft balls. I dont want to loose thees too does any one know what this could have been? I also found one of my orignal babys with dark brown holes in it so I cut it off and checked inside and they were only a couple of CM in. I will be very greatful for any info and advice.. I read through some older posts and didnt find any thing like this.. Thanks a bunch

Sounds to me like your fruit are aborting due to failed or non-pollination. Do a site search on pollination and you may get your answer.

Sounds like it could be a fungal problem. Look up pumpkin diseases somewhere. Your local garden may have an Ortho book (with color photos),that you can look at, to help you diagnose.Good luck!
