i went to move 2 pumpkins over the weekend only to find they were rotten on the bottom.any thories on this? it has been very wet.what are the advantages ot letting a patch rest for one year?

We used to have this problem & rainy years would worsen it.

We seem to have solved this by placing down a deep bed of builders sand under the developing fruit first. On this goes a piece of Pulp Mill Fabric. On this goes a shallow layer of play sand which acts as ball bearings & allows fruit movement.

Calcium wraps & sprays round off the treatment.

Doing this has reduced fruit rot fungus' here from as bad as 75% in a wet year to 0% last year & only 20% this year.

resting a patch for a couple seasons would probably help if another one is available. We don't have that option.
