Both of my bigger pumpkins (about 30" circumfrence) have developed small splits that are about 2-3" long16th" wide and I can't tell how deep they go, in the stems of the pumpkin. The stems are about 6" long and the pumpkins seem to be growing fairly well. Is this a problem? Do I try to continue with these pumpkins and place Captan on the stem or do I cull these pumpkins now and get on with things?

hey brian i really cant anser your question but to my knowledge i would pit a captan paste on the crack or atleast try and keep it dry by using a small fan or something? Anyway also on my biggest pumpkin, its at 23.5in in circumference at ten days and has a 59.5 OTT measurement, its developed a small split or cut im not shure what happned but it is crossways on the pumpkin about one inch long, this was yesturday and it looks like its healing over i think it will be fine.

I had a similar crack in the stem of my biggest pumpkin last year. I put Captan on it and it healed over. The pumpkin later went down with a rib split. I would not cull it unless your other prospects are better. I know of several growers who "paint" their stems with captan paste as soon as they determine that they are going to keep that pumpkin. Then they keep the fungicide on it for the whole season.
