Has anybody tried to plant an early trap plant of hubbard squash to lure a vine borer away from your AG plant? And if they did, did it work? Also has anybody ever seen a black silk cocoon containing a svb while tilling. I had a little problem with them last summer, just wondering if they can be found overwintering in the area where the vines were hit.

Yes Laura, winter tilling can destroy those larvae you saw.

I can't say as I've ever tried to plant a sacrificial trap plamnt. I'll be interested to hear if others have. I usually rely on the conventional chemical assault.

KILLING FROST and snow should be the way - if we could only influence...but forecast is heavy winter all over the world this year. Just started for you as I read, looks the same over here. Maybe first time for 8 years or more, I hope so. We might see a small amount of larvae remaining and less insects and disease in 2005. Nature (and AG´s) would love it.

Good question. I was wondering the same thing.
Next year I plan on trying a hubbard trap plant for svb, and also a few other deterant plants for other insects.

I had NO insect problems at all this year. My patch was infested with frogs and lizards, not to mention ground dwelling spiders! I did not do this intentionally, and I sure hope it continues next year. :)

I have no idea how to invite such friends to my patch.
